Art & Sol - After School Creativity Workshops

Harwood's Art & Sol program offers exciting after-school workshops for Escuela's elementary students. Taught by professional teaching artists, your child has the opportunity to explore ceramics, photography, mixed media, theater and more, right here on the Escuela/Harwood campus. Each semester has two sessions and children already enrolled in extended care receive a discount. Please read below to see this semester's offerings or download the pdf for a printable schedule.

- All registration fees must be paid in full prior to the first class meeting. Unpaid registrations will be canceled the Friday prior to the first class meeting.
- Registration fees will not be pro-rated for any class.
- Registration fees reflect materials fees where applicable.
- Primary classes are open to students who are at least 4 years old at the time of the first class meeting.

ELEMENTARY Art & Sol Program
Session 1

 

TUESDAYS

Making Art History
Learn about artists and art movements of the 19th & 20th centuries and create art inspired by this time period out of recycled materials. Starting with Gustav Klimt and the Vienna Secession / Art Nouveau movement, to the Dada movement, and ending with Le Corbusier’s architecture - art history is in your hands!

WEDNESDAYS 

Chess Club
Learn analytical, social, and leadership skills through chess! These chess clubs go beyond a normal chess curriculum to teach skills through innovative team chess variants of Bughouse and Super Bughouse. Wonder what that means? Sign up for chess club and find out!

Shakespeare Comes Alive
Enter the magical and adventurous world of William Shakespeare! Students will play games, write plays, and perform scenes from a few of Shakespeare’s most famous plays. No experience required – only a love of language and performing!

Ukulele Orchestra
Learn fun songs to sing while playing a ukulele! Basic ukulele and singing techniques will be covered and the class will become an orchestra of ukuleles! Each student will receive their own ukulele!  (Ukuleles provided thanks to Baum’s Music.)

Artist Trading Cards
Make your very own set of Artist Trading Cards! The materials & inspiration of the week – music, collage, paint, pencil, and more, will inspire each card! By the end of the course students will have their own unique collection of trading cards. After documenting your original set of cards, start trading with your classmates!

Cartographic Memory
Study the art of map making! Create maps of your memories, maps of places you’ve been, maps of memories, and maps from your imaginations. Explore how maps tell a story and how maps navigate others through that story!

Intro to Songwriting
Learn basic songwriting concepts such as: song structure; lyrical feel and content; and rhyme schemes. Work individually and in groups to explore songwriting as a method of self-expression and storytelling.
