Art & Sol - After School Creativity Workshops

Harwood's Art & Sol program offers exciting after-school workshops for Escuela's elementary and primary students. Taught by professional teaching artists, your child has the opportunity to explore ceramics, photography, mixed media, theater and more, right here on the Escuela/Harwood campus. Each semester has two sessions and children already enrolled in extended care receive a discount. Please read below to see this semester's offerings or download the pdf for a printable schedule.

- All registration fees must be paid in full prior to the first class meeting. Unpaid registrations will be canceled the Friday prior to the first class meeting.
- Registration fees will not be pro-rated for any class.
- Registration fees reflect materials fees where applicable.
- Primary classes are open to students who are at least 4 years old at the time of the first class meeting.

PRIMARY Art & Sol Program

WEDNESDAYS

Arts Exploration!
Young artists will use traditional art supplies along with recycled, everyday materials to explore and express their impressions of the world around us. This class is open to both new and returning students

Sing Songs: Tunes for Children
Music is for everyone! In this class, students will learn a selection of songs from around the world. In addition to singing accompanied by the instructor's ukulele, we'll also sing a cappella, using body percussion techniques and learning the basics of improvisation concepts. Young musicians can also feel free to move and dance.

Session 1: January 14 – March 6, 2014

 

TUESDAYS

Ceramics: Tiles, Architecture and Geometry
Students will create a variety of ceramic tiles as they learn about various motifs and tile designs from around the world. This class will focus on slab building construction and creating geometric and architectural designs. New and returning ceramics students welcome! Returning students will expand upon what they learned last semester, and new students will learn the basics.

Chess Club
Chess is an exciting game that teaches children discipline, creative problem solving and a lifelong love of learning. In addition to learning the game, children will develop leadership skills and be offered equal opportunity for tournaments. All skill levels are welcome! This class will run for 14 weeks.

Fun With Fabric Paper!
Discover collage’s playful side as you gather fabrics, paint, papers, rubber stamps and other favorite materials. We will create fabric paper which is a combination of paper and fabric, assembled in a way to create a base for all kinds of wonderful mixed media art. We will explore techniques such as: dying paper and fabric; making paper mono-prints; machine sewing with free-form stitches; creating wall art, journals , cards and mobiles.

Introduction to Songwriting
In this class, students will learn the basics of songwriting. We'll discuss concepts such as song structure, lyrical feel and content, and rhyme schemes. Working both individually and in groups, students will explore songwriting as a method of self-expression and storytelling. A performance showcasing student work will conclude the session.

Session 2: March 11 – May 8, 2014

Ceramics – The Animal: Hand-Building and Sculpting
In this class students will learn the basics of hand-building vessels and move toward narrative figurative sculptures. Pinch, coil and slab techniques will be introduced to develop their skills while creating animal themed projects.

DIY Printmaking
In this class, we will explore the many methods of printmaking that do not require special tools or a printing pres. We'll learn techniques such as monoprints, collagraphs and stenciling. We'll use spoons to hand-print and experiment with other alternative tools to create amazing works of art.
